Quality Limited by Training

As an organization undertakes a Quality Initiative it should promote Mgmt Emphasis on Training. This Mgmt Emphasis on Training should influence the initiation of Quality Improvement Projects which in tern influence an improvement in Service Quality. The improvement in Service Quality should increase Revenue thus further influencing the Quality Initiative within the organization. The result is a Reinforcing Loop as depicted in Fig. 1.

If the diagrams below are unfamiliar please refer to the Causal Loop Diagram page.

Fig. 1 - Quality Initiative

To this point all is well and good. The structure is producing benefits for the organization, though again as with all reinforcing structures limits are lurking somewhere. As the staff undertake more Quality Improvement Projects the projects tend to become more difficult. All the low hanging fruit has been picked and now the improvements are more difficult to develop. The staff realize they have an additional Need for Training.

Fig. 2 - Training Department Limits Limit Projects

Additional Training is provided as needed thus enhancing Staff Skills. The enhancement in Staff Skills reduces Staff Discouragement which reduces the negative impact on Quality Improvement Projects. This continues until the Training Dept Staff & Budget Limits are reached. When this happens the Additional Training needed doesn't happen so Staff Skills don't develop which leads to Discouragement and in time has a negative impact on Quality Improvement Projects. What is described here and depicted in Fig. 2 is a Limits to Growth structure.

For strategies for dealing with this structure see the Limits to Growth Systems Archetype article.
